I have form tapped quite a few 1/4-20 holes in Mic-6 place, running the same canned cycle as I run in 6061 with the same coolant (Fuchs or Blaser at around 8-9). I want to give the customer the best threads and even though formed threads are usually better I know that sometimes the formed material can become brittle from the forming operation leading to weaker threads. ![]() I would like to form tap all the cast parts and I'm looking for advice from anyone here who hasreal world experience with sand cast aluminum parts that have had form tapped holes. aluminum alloy 6 system and 7 system, magnesium alloy, titanium alloy. But now I'm doing a lot more sand cast aluminum parts that are various alloys, 356 being one of them. W,Whiteworth Thread,Roll Form Fluteless Taps,Cobalt HSS W8120,including custom. Forming taps can last from 3 to 20 times more than cutting taps. I have also tapped sand cast aluminum parts but only a few times and I don't know how well the threads held up. In roll taps, the cold deformation that produces the thread is interesting because. ![]() Die cast aluminum alloys too, though I don't know what specific alloys. 304 SS, 17-4 SS, 43 steel are metals I have had good luck with. Jarflo roll form pipe taps (NPT & NPS) have significant advantages over cutting taps in many applications.
